Possibly used as a replacement for cabassets, the bascinet is one of the most common pieces of headgear among cavalry and infantry from 1300 until approximately 1420. It can be seen in artistic representations, where entire troops wore this kind of protection.
Its pointed shape is specifically designed to avoid any damage to the neck by hits. Some of these helmets were combined with a coif instead of with an aventail.
